A Screen That Changed Our World

Every year on November 21, we celebrate World Television Day—a day that honours the power of television to inform, educate, and connect people across the world. Television is not just a machine with buttons. It is a storyteller, a teacher, a companion, and sometimes the bridge between people and the world beyond their walls.

Before smartphones and endless scrolling, television was the magical window that brought stories to life. It showed us breaking news, unforgettable dramas, cartoons that coloured our childhood, and documentaries that widened our thinking. It has taken us to places we never visited and introduced us to people we never met. Through its screen, the world becomes smaller, closer, and more familiar.

A Small Story That Shows Its Power

Once, during a heavy rainy season in a small village, a young girl named Amaara would sit with her grandfather every evening, watching the news on their small old television. One night, the news showed the struggles of families affected by floods in another district. Amaara, who was only twelve, quietly picked up her piggy bank and said, “Seeya, can we help them? Even little?”

Her grandfather smiled with tears in his eyes. The next day, he took her to a donation camp. Amaara placed her tiny savings in the box. For her, it was small. For those families, it was hope.

That day, her grandfather said, “Child, this is why television matters. It doesn’t just show stories—it awakens kindness.”

Television has been doing exactly this for decades: opening hearts, shaping opinions, and inspiring action.

Why This Day Matters

Even in today’s digital world, television has not lost its influence. It has simply evolved. Smart TVs, global channels, streaming platforms, and high-quality content continue to inform and entertain millions. But its purpose remains the same—bringing people together through shared stories.

World Television Day reminds us to appreciate responsible media, meaningful storytelling, and factual information. A single program can change someone’s mindset, spark a movement, or create awareness about important issues.

Television is not just entertainment. It is connection, communication, and understanding. It is a global window helping us see our world with clarity and compassion.

As we celebrate this day, let us honour the screen that shaped our memories, taught us lessons, and continues to bring the world a little closer—one story at a time.
