Understanding the Human-Elephant Conflict
For many years, elephants have been an important part of nature and Sri Lankan culture. But today, humans and elephants are facing serious conflicts because they are forced to share the same land.
Why Does This Happen?
As towns, roads, and farms continue to grow, forests are being destroyed. Because of this, elephants lose their natural habitats and food sources.
When elephants cannot find enough food in forests, they enter nearby villages and farms searching for crops like paddy, bananas, and corn.
Problems Faced by People
This creates many difficulties for farmers and families:
- Crops are destroyed overnight
- Houses and property can be damaged
- Some people are injured or even lose their lives
Problems Faced by Elephants
Elephants also suffer because people try to protect their farms using:
- Electric fences
- Explosives hidden in food
- Illegal traps
These methods can seriously injure or kill elephants.
Why We Need Better Solutions?
Traditional methods only push elephants from one place to another. Instead of fighting against wildlife, we need peaceful and long-term solutions that protect both humans and elephants.
